Read Revelation Chapter 21 and 22. As you do keep in mind that “new” in these chapters does not mean something shiny and clean, without blemish, etc. Certainly these descriptions would apply. But “new” in these chapters means something unknown before this. For example there’s a difference between getting rid of an old rusty cook stove and buying a brand new shiny enameled one – that’s one definition for new. But our definition this week of “new” would mean we went to the cook stove store and discovered a microwave oven – something completely new in the world of cooking.

The new Heaven, new Earth and new City are going to be completely unlike anything we’ve seen, experienced, or can even describe. Remember that as we study this week – God is going to do something completely new, and He’s going to do it only for those whose names are written in the Lambs Book of Life.

Read Chapters 21 and 22 then answer the following:

1. What is created in verse 1?
   1. ANSWER: A New Heaven and a New Earth.
2. What happened to the old Heaven and the old Earth? (2 Peter 3:10)
   1. ANSWER: Destroyed by extreme heat.
3. What does God tell us about the former things that are destroyed in this heat? (Isaiah 65:17)
   1. ANSWER: That we will not remember them, or that we will forget them and never think of them again. All of the pain, suffering, injustice and evil we’ve ever experienced will be gone, and not ever remembered again.
4. What else is created “New” in verse 2?
   1. ANSWER: The new city of Jerusalem.
5. How is it adorned in verse 2?
   1. ANSWER: As a bride adorned for her husband – it will be jeweled and beautifully dressed.
6. What is one of the “new” things we see about this city in verse 3?
   1. ANSWER: God Himself will be with them in the city – God and resurrected man in the same place.
7. In Revelation 21:7 what does Christ say will happen?
   1. ANSWER: That he will be our God and we will be his son.
8. Revelation 21:9-13 describes the outer perimeter of the new city of Jerusalem with a great high wall and twelve gates and it tells us these gates have the names of the 12 tribes written on them. Can you list each tribe on each gate, beginning with the East Gate? What name will be on each gate for the East, South, West, and North Gates? (Numbers Chapter 2)
   1. ANSWER: Each of the tribes is listed beginning with the tribe of Judah at the East Gate; these names will be displayed on their gate on the wall surrounding the city.
9. Last week we said that the Apostles would be Judges and sit on thrones in Christ’s Millennial Kingdom. Where do we see the Apostles’ names in the New Jerusalem? (Rev 21:14)
   1. ANSWER: On one each of the twelve foundations.
10. What is the size of the city in terms of today’s measurements? (Rev 21:15-17)
    1. ANSWER: 1,400 miles high, 1,400 miles wide, and 1,400 miles long, with walls 200 feet thick. This means just to walk through the gates would take two thirds of a football field.
11. Now that we know the city will be 1,400 miles high consider this, the space shuttle flies between 400 and 800 miles in the air when it’s in space, they would be orbiting about the midway up point on the New City. Can you think of something as a physical reference for what 1,400 miles wide or 1,400 miles long would represent to help understand these distances? How about the distance between the East Coast and a Western City – say Kansas City or perhaps Denver long and Canada to Mexico wide? Do you think this will provide enough room for all of the saved to have their own homes with God?
12. What is the significance of the stones described in Revelation 21:19-20? (See Exodus 28:15-21)
    1. ANSWER: They are the twelve stones found in the breastplate of the High Priest.
13. Read 21:21 through 22:5 – list all of the things which are “new” or which make this “new”:
    1. ANSWER 1: No temple – God and the Lamb are there, no need of the Temple.
    2. ANSWER 2: No sun, no moon – our source of light then will be God and Christ, also means no night, only day and we never tire.
    3. ANSWER 3: Gates are never shut.
    4. ANSWER 4: Only those written in the Lamb’s Book of Life can enter.
    5. ANSWER 5: River of life proceeding out of the throne.
    6. ANSWER 6: The Tree of Life, originally in the Garden of Eden grows there.
    7. ANSWER 7: Twelve fruit, one for each month to sustain us physically.
    8. ANSWER 8: No more curse – sin is not in the city.
    9. ANSWER 9: We shall see the face of God.
14. We are commanded to do keep the teachings of this book “for the time is at hand”. Now that Christ has revealed himself and his plan for us and all mankind what are we to do with this information? What are we to do until He comes again? Read 2 Peter 3:10-14 and list what we’re commanded to do:
    1. ANSWER 1: Live holy and godly lives.
    2. ANSWER 2: Look forward to the “Day of God”.
    3. ANSWER 3: Be found spotless, blameless and at peace with Him.
15. Why does it seem the Lord is slow in returning? Why doesn’t he come back today, why don’t we have the rapture right now and move on to the new city and new heaven and earth right now and skip all the rest – I’m ready for Christ to return today…why doesn’t he? (Read 2 Peter 3:8-9) What does Peter tell us about Christ and salvation?
    1. ANSWER 1: That he desires everyone to be saved and that he is not going to rush, he wants to make sure everyone has the opportunity. If he came today think of all the lost who would truly be lost.
    2. ANSWER 2: We need to have Christ’s love, his patience, and attitude as we work in His kingdom – looking forward to His coming and seeking the lost while we wait.

What an exciting, terrible, horrible, and awesome book Revelation is and what an eye opening study as we’ve seen first hand God’s final plan for mankind and his plans for our eternal existence. Have an awesome week and praise God for His infinite love and patience and for His great sacrifice that makes us a part of His inheritance.
