Fourth Marriage

"No wonder they say that truth is stranger than fiction."

As a news photographer I covered lots of events. One I remember was an elderly society lady who was being married for the fourth time. The reporter and I spent some time at the reception and I took pictures while the reporter interviewed the guests. When I had gotten all the photos I thought we needed, I told the reporter it was time to go. "Not yet" she said, "I have one more question to ask the bride."

I followed her and we met the bride, who was in the kitchen making sure all was going well. The reporter said she didn’t wish to be a pest, but the four marriages intrigued her. The hostess asked what she wanted to know.

"Well, you were married first to a millionaire, then to a Broadway stage producer, next came a minister, and now a funeral director. I’m curious."

The lady looked at my companion, thought for a moment, then turned toward her, smiled, and said "Well, it was like this, you know the old saying ...‘One for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go.’"
